Date Sweetener (Alternative To Agave)

Seeing as there’s a lot of conversation going on right now about whether agave has a place in a healthy diet, I’ve made a little video showing you how to simply make a whole food sweetener from just dates and water.

I get asked about my views on agave fairly often, and this video provides an alternative for people who want another option. It doesn’t mean I am saying agave is or isn’t ‘good’ or ‘bad'; that’s for another conversation.

I think there’s more conversation to be had about agave. With that said, here’s another great whole food alternative.

Hi Russell — when a recipe calls for agave, would we use the same amount of the date sweetener? Thanks for all you do!

This is brilliant! Not just because of the health aspect, but because of the financial advantage as well. We live in Ukraine, and agave nectar is prohibitively expensive, while dates are very reasonably priced.

You mentioned about 1 1/2 cups water but I did not hear you mention the amount of dates you used… could you share that with me? Thanks so much for all of your tips and recipes, all that I have tried are great!

    Great tip, thank you!
Specifically after hearing a while ago that agave might not be the best choice…. So for what other time will ‘that’ conversation be appropriate, I really would like to know whether the story is true or not?

Hi Stella, it depends on which story you mean. There seems to be a lot of opinion about it, but no one can really agree the details. I still use a good quality agave for raw chocolate, but that’s about all.

How about substituting coconut water for water with the dates? Would that change how long this mixture will keep in the refrigerator?

I observed that lingering on aftertaste, like chocolate or agave tells me that these foods are undesirable. I like dates but not by themselves; with milk or soy milk.
I,ll try to chew a date while drinking coffee. What natural thing would you suggest instead of creamer?
